A deep sense of anxiety is rooted deep into the minds of many women, people of color, trans, nonbinary, and/or queer people who enjoy punk shows. PWR BTTM’s treachery has laid another burden onto those already marked as “other” by a scene that is overwhelmingly cis-gendered, hetero, white and/or male. How should we feel knowing that the swift hammer of retribution was--rightfully--brought down against PWR BTTM, but bands like Front Porch Step and Attila are still out there, enjoying support and success while threatening our safety and throwing words like “faggot” or “bitch” around with the intention to hurt and offend?
PWR BTTM could have been everything, the “fuck you” to the false open-mindedness that still persists in punk music. Now, though, the band is deservedly in ruins, as is our trust. We will continue to stand with the survivors of sexual assault and fight back against injustice, as punk was always meant to do. We will continue to be ourselves and foster a welcoming, safe community in spite of this. In the immortal words of Tyra Banks, “We were rooting for you. We were all rooting for you.” And we were wrong. But one day soon, we won’t be.
