Covering a song with an already catchy hook or unique delivery that makes it fresh and interesting isn't the hardest thing for a band to do, however trying to transform a song that wasn't particularly memorable in the first place can be a seemingly insurmountable obstacle. It's a testament to how skilled some of these bands are then that some of these songs work. The track There's Nothing Holding Me Back originally by Shawn Mendes is an irritating fluffy pop song that makes me want to tear my ears off. The cover by We Set Signals is an entirely different story, while the underlying melody hasn't been touched the performance with meaningful guitars add a nice punch to the otherwise bland song.
Andy Cizak (of Makari and WVNDR) and Nik Nocturnal cover Post Malone's Rockstar and turn into a true rock anthem. The band Outline In Color took one of my favorite songs off of Kesha's Rainbow, Learn To Let Go and absolutely nailed it. It's given a new sense of weight and gravity with the addition of unclean vocals, chugging guitars, and heavy drums. Unfortunately a few of the songs on here like the cover of Something Just Like this do nothing to adapt the original track or transform it in any meaningful way. Sometimes simply performing the song in different format doesn't work.
Got You Covered Volume 2 continues in the lighthearted and fun tradition of metal and rock bands covering radio pop songs. Overall the artists on here were successful and mastering the art of the cover. They don't all land and certainly not all will appeal to you even if you're a fan of the original (or possibly because of) but it's a great listen throughout to hear these artists give their take on some of today's biggest hits.
