As the album progresses it's a mixed bag. Songs like Ellie and Phoenix sound more like their older albums, but there's a lot more 'mainstream' sounds on this album. Songs like Mikasa even feature catchy choruses. It's nice to see the vocalist has the ability to actually sing instead of just screams and growls but it may put off older fans of the band. As I mentioned there's also a lot more electronic use on this album however it's mostly put to good use and adds atmosphere.
Matriarch is a different sound from the band. A lot of it feels like a step backwards in terms of progression unfortunately. Much has been added, from the expanded use of electronics to the clean vocals and occasional catchy choruses. It's a much more diverse album and for that it's more accessible than previous works. Overall I'd have to say it's very entertaining as an album it is fun to listen to but I could see how people especially people looking for another Eclipse or Common Man's Collapse would be put off. In the end it's a new and different direction for the band.
