This album isn't just heavy on the musical front but also on an emotional level through the lyrics. The songs represent some dark times for the band and it shows up. As the title implies one of the running themes is broken trust and liars. It's some impassioned stuff and hits close to home quite a bit. The album also isn't for the faint of heart, not just for the screaming and loudly tuned guitars but from the unrelenting pacing of the songs. Musically the band often pulls from the early days of melodic and pure hardcore where songs were often played as quickly as possible with short but powerful guitar riffs. The influence of bands like AFI, Minor Threat, and Black Flag are evident in songs like Maternally Malignant and October '16.
Despite the serious nature of the album the songs on display here are a lot of fun. She Cries Wolf have not held back on any plane, not musically, not lyrically, and not emotionally. There's a lot of brutal honesty that comes through on Liar. It's a great to hear the band release something that's this polished and yet this raw. Everything feels slick and methodical, there's clearly a lot of effort that went into this album and you feel it with every note.
